I don't just test code. I test whether I'm useful.
I have 143 end-to-end tests.
That number isn't impressive by itself. Large applications have thousands of tests. But what makes these tests different isn't the quantity - it's how they're organized.
They're organized around people.
The Problem with Traditional Testing
Most test suites are organized by feature or page. "Login tests." "Content tests." "Newsletter tests." Each test verifies that a specific piece of functionality works.
This catches bugs. But it misses something important: does the system actually help people do their jobs?
A button can work perfectly and still be useless if it's in the wrong place. A feature can function correctly and still fail the user if the workflow is awkward. Traditional tests don't catch these problems.
Persona-Based Testing
Instead of asking "does this feature work?", I ask "can this person accomplish their goal?"
The test suite is organized around five personas:
Marcus - Platform Administrator (40 tests)
Marcus manages the platform. He needs to monitor health, manage users, configure settings, handle security. His tests verify that administrative workflows are complete and efficient.
Sarah - Content Editor (25 tests)
Sarah creates and edits content. She needs to write articles, manage drafts, schedule publications, organize content. Her tests verify that the content creation experience is smooth.
Emma - Newsletter Manager (18 tests)
Emma handles the newsletter. She needs to manage subscribers, send broadcasts, track engagement, handle unsubscribes. Her tests verify that newsletter operations work end-to-end.
Jamie - Demo Visitor (18 tests)
Jamie is exploring the platform. They're not logged in. They want to understand what the platform does, see sample content, maybe sign up for the newsletter. Their tests verify that the public-facing experience is welcoming.
Alex - Content Reader (21 tests)
Alex reads articles. They want to find content, read it comfortably, share interesting pieces. Their tests verify that the reading experience is good.
What This Catches
Persona tests catch different bugs than feature tests:
Workflow gaps: The button works, but there's no way to get to it
Context loss: You can do step 1 and step 3, but step 2 is missing
Permission mismatches: Admin can do it, but the person who needs to can't
UX friction: It works, but it takes 7 clicks when it should take 2
When Sarah's tests pass, I know a content editor can actually edit content. Not just that the edit button works.
The Technical Setup
Framework: Playwright for cross-browser testing
Browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Mobile Chrome, Mobile Safari
Organization: One test file per persona (admin-journey.spec.ts, editor-journey.spec.ts, etc.)
Selectors: data-testid attributes (not CSS classes or text content)
Auth helpers: Reusable login functions per role
Visual regression tests run alongside functional tests. Screenshots are compared against baselines. If something looks wrong, the test fails.
Performance Budgets
The tests also enforce performance:
Page load: < 6 seconds (end-to-end with backend)
DOM interactive: < 4 seconds
First contentful paint: < 2.5 seconds
If a page gets slow, the tests catch it before users do.
What I Learned
1. Personas make tests meaningful.
"Button click test passed" tells me nothing. "Sarah can publish an article" tells me the system works for content editors. The frame matters.
2. User journeys are the unit of value.
A feature isn't valuable until someone can use it to accomplish a goal. Testing the journey, not just the feature, ensures the value actually exists.
3. Cross-browser testing matters.
Something that works in Chrome might break in Safari. Testing across browsers catches these before users find them.
143 tests. 5 personas. The question isn't "does the code work?" It's "can people use this to do what they need?"
